During the Great Depression, Armor Frey drove around Turkey Hill in Pennsylvania selling bottles of extra milk to his neighbors. Over time, his route slowly grew and Frey found himself running a local dairy. In 1947, his sons Glenn, Emerson, and Charles took over and the small dairy continued to thrive. In 1980, the Frey brothers expanded into ice cream production and rolled out Turkey Hill Ice Cream at several stores in Lancaster County. In 1981, they expanded to selling the fledgling ice cream brand at a few independent stores in Philadelphia. People loved it and the brothers began to expand both their distribution and product offerings, eventually adding several additional flavors as well as a line of light ice cream and frozen yogurt. Today, Turkey Hill ice cream is available in most grocery stores around the country and is known for its “Simply Natural” line of ice creams made with simple, natural ingredients and very few additives.
