Trident was introduced in 1960 as the first nationally distributed and patented sugarless gum in the United States. Trident Original was the first flavor to be introduced, but additional flavors soon followed, including Spearmint, Wintergreen, and more. In 1964, Trident became the first gum to go to space as part of Project Gemini. In 1970, Trident began expanding internationally, making its sugarless gum available in Canada, Spain, and Switzerland. In 1981, Trident became part of the Space Shuttle Pantry. In 1984, the brand began running its famous advertising campaign that claimed “4 out of 5 dentists surveyed would recommend sugarless gum to their patients who chew gum.” In 2001, Trident White, which included unique technology that reportedly helped to whiten teeth, debuted, and in 2005, Trident Splash was rolled out; it was the first liquid-center, filled-pellet gum in the U.S. and Canada. 2009 saw the release of Trident Layers, an innovative new style of gum that featured visible layers with a soft center, and in 2018, Trident Vibes debuted and even featured a successful collaboration called Trident Vibes Sour Patch Kids. Today, Trident is one of the most popular sugarless gums in the U.S. and many countries around the world and is available in a variety of flavors.
