In 1914, Michael Hintlian and his extended family emigrated to America from Armenia. In 1925, he established The Leavitt Corporation in Boston, MA. The company started off by selling bulk salted nuts and specialty candies. In 1931, The Leavitt Corporation began producing and selling peanut butter to meet the rising demand for low-cost, high-nutrition foods during the Great Depression. By 1931, the Teddie brand name was established and the new peanut butter was quickly becoming a popular staple throughout the New England area. Michael Hintlian’s son Jim joined the company in the late 1940s with an eye towards market expansion and strict quality standards; he became the President and CEO of the company in 1955. In 1960, the company moved from downtown Boston to Everett, Massachusetts in order to meet the growing demand for Teddie Peanut Butter (the company also continued to produce packaged nuts in several varieties). Today, Teddie Peanut Butter is extremely popular throughout the New England area. It is available in several varieties, including Smooth, Super Chunky, Unsalted, Organic, and With Flaxseed.
